Founded in 1876 and granted its Royal Charter in 1909, the University of Bristol has enjoyed a long-standing reputation for excellence and is consistently ranked among the leaders in UK higher education. According to The Times, it is ranked among the top 40 universities in the world and within the top 10 of universities within the UK.

With 17,000 students from over 100 countries, together with more than 5,500 staff, the University of Bristol is a moderately sized but vibrant institution. In terms of the number of applications per undergraduate place, Bristol is arguably the most popular university in the country. It is located in the heart of the city from which it grew, but is a significant player on the world stage as well as a major force in the economic, social and cultural life of South West England.
In the latest Research Assessment Exercise, over 61% of the research work assessed in 48 research fields has been awarded either the top 4* rating, defined as ‘world leading’ or the 3* rating, classed as ‘internationally excellent’. The QAA awarded the University an average score of ‘excellent’ in teaching quality.
As a mark of excellence, the University of Bristol is member of the Russell Group of major, research-intensive UK universities and a member of the Worldwide Universities Network (WUN), a partnership of sixteen research-led institutions of international standing from three different continents.
CoursesThe University of Bristol offers a broad range of courses at foundation, undergraduate, postgraduate and PhD level. Organised within six faculties – Arts, Engineering, Medical & Veterinary Sciences, Medicine & Dentistry, Science and Social Sciences & Law, the University has 45 departments, 15 collaborative research centres and 12 Schools: School of Arts School of Humanities School of Modern Languages School of Medical Sciences School of Biological Sciences School of Chemistry School of Geographical Sciences Graduate School of Education School for Policy Studies School of Applied Community and Health Studies School of Economics, Finance and Management School of Law FacilitiesThe University guarantees accommodation for all new, undergraduate and postgraduate, full-time international students who accept their place at Bristol by the given deadline. Halls of residence offer single study bedrooms equipped with data connection points. Some also offer en-suite bathrooms. All accommodation is within walking distance of the University precinct. The University Library houses more than 1,000,000 volumes and subscribes to over 6,000 periodicals; many departments also have specialised libraries. All students have free use of the Internet, accessible in departments, halls of residence, in the Students’ Union or at the 24-hour Computer Centre. The Student Union plays an active role within the University, providing facilities for more than 180 societies and 56 sports clubs. The new, centrally located Centre for Sport, Exercise and Health is part of a network of sports facilities at the University of Bristol, offering a range of activities for all levels of fitness.
The City of BristolThe University is an integral part of Bristol, a beautiful port city with a history dating back 1,000-years. With a population of over 500,000, Bristol is the largest city in the South West and the region’s leading centre for business, culture and education. It is a multicultural city of cafes and restaurants, festivals and carnivals, architecture and parkland, business and new technology, theatres and museums, artists and animators, music and film. It has been officially designated a 'Centre of Culture' by the Government and has recently been voted European City of the Year awarded by the Academy of Urbanism.
